Mary Virginia (Nee: Auterman) Kozenski (Sis, Virginia, Buster, Maud) turned the last page in the book of her life on August 26, 2017. She was born on January 2, 1928 to Ruth (Waltz) and Louis Auterman, the second of 4 children. She grew up in a time when ice for the icebox was delivered by horse-drawn wagon, people used streetcars to get around, and every house had a milk chute, root cellar and wringer washer. When she was an adolescent, the new drug penicillin saved her from a life-threatening infection. Mary graduated from St. Catherine’s High School, Class of 1946. After High School, she had a variety of jobs and interests (including millinery), but her dream job was at the Racine Public Library.  On September 13, 1952, she was united in marriage to the boy across the street, Anthony Kozenski, and what a lucky guy he was! Together, they raised 6 children who truly love each other’s company, and this was a source of great joy for her. She loved to read books. She loved reading so much that every 2 weeks she checked out 10 books from the library, even when she was raising all of those children! She was and still is, an integral part of the lives of her 9 grandchildren, who fondly remember her gentle guidance, accompanied by candy bars, cookies and ice cream bars. Mary was a mother to everyone, and was always there for her parents, in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends. She cooked 10’s of thousands of meals, 100’s of thousands of cookies, thousands of cakes and pies, and gallons upon gallons of soup, all for others to enjoy. She loved to read, travel, go to the movies and theater, shop for bargains, and camp with the family. She liked to eat chicken pot pie, watermelon, marshmallow cookies and the chocolates from a Whitman Sampler that she kept stashed in her bedroom. She was an active life-long member of St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church and a member of the Christian Mother’s Association. She is dearly loved and will be deeply missed by her husband of 64 years and 11 months, Tony, her children, Mary (Robert) Mainland of Tampa, FL, Theresa (Mustafa) Yundem of Caledonia, WI, Julia (Gregory) Peyton of Racine, WI, Stephen (Ann) Kozenski of Raymond, WI, Matthew (Laura) Kozenski of Mount Pleasant, WI, and Catherine (Laurent) Hayoz of Geneva, Switzerland, Grandchildren Natalie, Ayla, Jack, Madilyn, Amy, Christopher, Sarah, Emma and Elodie, and cousin Cletus (Ione) Ketterhagen. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Joan and Margaret, brother Jimmy and all of her sisters and brothers in law. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday August 31, 2017 at 10:30 am in St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church (1903 Green St.) Father Steve Varghese SAC officiating. The family will receive guests on Wednesday August 30, 2017 in the funeral home from 5-7 pm and again on Thursday August 31, 2017 in church from 9:30 am until the time of service. Entombment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery on HWY 32. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church and the Racine Public Library.
