_{Doris R. Meier, 89, formerly of Waukesha, entered eternal life early Monday morning May 1, 2017 in Huntington Place Memory Care in Janesville, WI.  She was born September 11, 1927 in Milwaukee, WI the daughter of Gus and Stella (Pyter) Gigl.  On her 21st birthday 1948 Doris married Francis M. Meier in Milwaukee.  Doris was a great homemaker and wonderful mother.  She was a very talented cook, baker, and cake decorator.  For many years, she ran her own business, Cakes for all Occasions.  She was also known as the Cake Lady of Waukesha.  She had been a devoted member of St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Waukesha initially.  She was president of Christian Mothers for many years, chaired special parish dinners for many years, did volunteer book work in the rectory, and was on the Liturgy planning panel.  In the 80’s she and Fran moved to St. William’s parish.  Again Doris became active, training Eucharistic ministers for nearly 20 years, Christian Women, bakery sales, and many parish functions.  She was also the sacristan setting up the Altar for every Mass for weekdays, funerals and weddings.  She began to scale back her duties as she turned 85.  Doris was very proud of her sons.  Her oldest, Michael, became a licensed funeral director in 1975, working for and managing several funeral homes in Milwaukee and Beloit.  He owned Strouf Funeral Home in Racine until his retirement in 2015.  Her second son Brian was a highly-trained Radiology Tech, Special Procedure Tech, and Departmental Manager for Aurora Health for nearly 40 years.  On March 6, 1999 Fran passed away and she was alone for the first time in her life.  A strong and resilient woman, Doris struck out and handled life well and successfully.  In 2015 Doris suffered a string of silent strokes that affected her in different ways.  The diagnosis of vascular dementia created more and more problems doing day to day activities.   She eventually chose to live with her son Mike, in his home in Beloit after his retirement.  Her day to day abilities became severely affected and the need for memory care was decided upon.  Dementia claimed her life in just over a year.  She is survived by her son Michael of Beloit, and son Brian (Cindy) of West Allis.  along with many cousins.  She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Fran. In 2012, her son Michael became a Racine Dominican Lay Associate, so it was only fitting that the Dominican sisters, who loved Doris very much, were asked to help celebrate her life with a funeral Mass of Christian Burial officiated by Fr. Antony Thomas, priest friend of son Mike.  Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery in Waukesha next to her husband and parents.  If so desired memorials may be made to either the Sisters of St. Dominic, or St. Elizabeth Manor, sent in care of the funeral home.
